“Mali Music” explains his Shift from Christian to ‘Secular’

BET's 2011 Celebration Of Gospel - ArrivalsFor those who don’t know “Mali Music”,

Kourtney Jamaal Pollard was originally a Gospel artist who took the christian audience by storm with his unique style. He then used his music to greatly promote the gospel.

But later in his career was signed and co-managed by the secular artist most popularly known as Akon.akon

But today as I was browsing YouTube, a friend of mine text’d me and suggested that I checkout one of Jamal’s (Mali Music) latest songs… So I did.

Unaware of the fundamental shift that Mali Music had made, I listened to his song “Beautiful”, which is on his latest album Beautiful.

Immediately I loved the song’s feel.

Mali’s has always had a very Urban and Positive vibe, but what really made him stand-out is when he combined his natural god-given talent with the message of Christ.

The MISSING INGREDIENT

But as I listened to the song, despite the positive lyrics and the relaxing music, It just felt like something was “Missing” from the song.

It sounded very generic, for lack of a better word.

So as I sat and wondered what could possibly be missing, I noticed that the message in this particular song was not the same as it has always been.

Usually, Mali’s lyrics included a positive message because his songs were usually based around the message of Jesus Christ, But as I listened to this song…

I noticed that although he used generic “Spiritual” words in his lyrics
( blessing, goodness, etc. )

the core gospel had been stripped away from it.

maliIt was only a regular song, with nice lyrics and nice music…. but there was no longer any power behind the words or the message.

“Well, Maybe I’m over thinking It.”

I thought, so after coming to that conclusion, I immediately defended him by saying…

“Well this is just one song on the album, I’m sure he has more than talk about Christ.”

But as I began to listen to each song, one-by-one, I found that they all had been stripped from the original foundation that Mali’s music had been built around… Jesus.

So as I was searching for an answer, I came across an interview that he did with a reporter which explained this change of direction in his music.

And I must say that I was very disappointed

I must say that I was quite disappointed after seeing this interview.

It saddens me how so many Christians are being captured by satan and his powerful tool that most of us know as “Hollywood”.

What happened to mali’s music is that it has been “Neutered”.

His music has been stripped of the Gospel because the mainstream does not want the message of Jesus to be spread. Instead, It is considered “Offensive” to the majority of the world so they lure young artists in with wealth and popularity if they will cease to promote it.

(1 Corinthians 1:23)  As for us, we proclaim the crucified Christ, a message that is offensive to the Jews and nonsense to the Gentiles;

Although it pains me to say this, Mali has been “Sold” for the price of mainstream exposure.

When he first entered the industry, God blessed him because he was using his talent not only to bless God’s people but to spread the news of his goodness and his glory.

But now, Mali’s music has been “Censored”.

Although this may result in him becoming more popular to the “World”, he is in a sense become “Useless” to the message of Christ.

Satan’s favorite tool is to tell artists…

“You don’t have to stop singing positive,

Just don’t mention Jesus or religion and everyone will love your music.”

And many of today’s Christian artists have fallen victim to this trick, they have stopped using their gifts to glorify God and instead are using their gift to gain “acceptance” by the world.

(James 4:4)  Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Although It may be tempting, we cannot sacrifice our Christian morals just for the acceptance of the world.

Jesus told his disciples that they should NOT try to be accepted by the world, because the world hated Jesus, therefore it will also hate his followers.

(John 17:12)  While I was with them, I kept them safe by the power of your name, the name you gave me. I protected them, and not one of them was lost, except the man who was bound to be lost—so that the scripture might come true.

(John 17:13)  And now I am coming to you, and I say these things in the world so that they might have my joy in their hearts in all its fullness.

(John 17:14)  I gave them your message, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.

This post is not to “Bash” mali or his music.

Now although this song still does have a positive message (which is good),

this post is just being used to exemplify how Hollywood is trying to [Censor] the gospel of Jesus and how we as Christians are actually allowing it to happen in certain situations.

sometimes it is easy to get side-tracked by the things of this world, But it is always God who is able to steer us back in the right direction.

Brother Deon, It’s been a while since I viewed anything on the blog as well, this is the first time tonight looking back in on
Deon vs Earth, and as I came across one of your previous post and saw this one, it sadden me to see that Mali Music has decided to go secular.

I thought on this scripture as I read this blog, and watched a small part of the interview, not all, I didn’t care to continue to
    the end.

    2 Timothy
    3:1-17
    ESV

“But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.”

Even though all of the things mentioned above does not pertain to all that is going on here, but we have to see the fulfilling of this scripture, that in the last days perilous times will come, people will have a form of Godliness, but
denying the power thereof, and turning their backs on God to follow their own desires. As the body of Christ, we must see the need for prayer and preparation.

      Sis Alicia,

      Thanks for leaving your feedback!

And I totally agree, we are literally seeing these scriptures unfold right before our very eyes.

It is as if the “Church” has been so saturated with “Religion” that they have begun denying the power of God to actually CHANGE their lives. Empty Religion is dangerous, what many people don’t realize is that it was the religious LEADERS who had Jesus Crucified. The concept of “Religion” is no more than man-made precepts being taught as “doctrine”, and that was when I finally understood Jesus’s words to the Pharisees and the Scribes.

      (John 8:42-58) ERV:

      Jesus said to them…

“If God were really your Father, you would love me.

I came from God, and now I am here. I did not come by my own authority. God sent me.

You don’t understand the things I say, because you cannot accept my teaching.

Your father is the devil. You belong to him. You want to do what he wants. He was a murderer from the beginning.

He was always against the truth. There is no truth in him. He is like the lies he tells. Yes, the devil is a liar. He is the father of lies.

“I am telling you the truth, and that’s why you don’t believe me.

Can any of you prove that I am guilty of sin? If I tell the truth, why don’t you believe me?

Whoever belongs to God accepts what he says. But you don’t accept what God says, because you don’t belong to God.”

The Jews there answered, “We say you are a Samaritan. We say a demon is making you crazy! Are we not right when we say this?”

Jesus answered, “I have no demon in me. I give honor to my Father, but you give no honor to me.

I am not trying to get honor for myself. There is one who wants this honor for me. He is the judge.

I promise you, whoever continues to obey my teaching will never die.”

The Jews said to Jesus, “Now we know that you have a demon in you! Even Abraham and the prophets died. But you say, ‘Whoever obeys my teaching will never die.’

Do you think you are greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”

Jesus answered, “If I give honor to myself, that honor is worth nothing. The one who gives me honor is my Father. And you say that he is your God.

But you don’t really know him. I know him. If I said I did not know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him, and I obey what he says.

Your father Abraham was very happy that he would see the day when I came. He saw that day and was happy.”

The Jews said to Jesus, “What? How can you say you have seen Abraham? You are not even 50 years old!”

Jesus answered, “The fact is, before Abraham was born, I AM.”

I am truly disappointed that Mali has made such a poor decision. I feel like he used the Christian Community to bring himself notoriety for this very moment to leave us high and dry. The spirit of Judas has caused our brother to sell out for a bag of silver. Nothing that Satan offered him can compare to the blessings the Lord had for him. I pray that one day he will find his way back home.

    • Hey Shay! Thanks for your response.

But I honestly understand how you feel, I too was very disappointed by this. It seems that there is a systematic plan to pull all of the christian artists out of the church and into the “World”. But I believe that God will raise up a generation of believers who will impact the world and who won’t give in to the world’s systems

  • I feel so disappointed. Mali’s so talented and his songs were anointed…truly beautiful to listen to. His decision? Such a blow! But the amazing thing about God, is that He never gives up on us, I believe that with all my heart…sometimes we make grave mistakes, we find ourselves so far away from His love…from that plan that He initially had for us, but we are still never out of reach from His love.

So many times I feel overwhelmingly sad when I listen to music on you tube by very anointed people, people who started in the spirit…but along the way? I really fail to understand what usually happens. We just become no longer interested in representing God with our lives. It’s so sad, devastating, people who are still open to the truth, who have accepted the gift of salvation? Are already few, but even those few who remain? Can be such a let down sometimes!

My prayer for all of us, is that God will enable us in our daily walk with Him. To keep our eyes focused on Him…so we’re not caught up in he distractions of this world, but that we’re able to love Him and reach out to Him with all genuinity! For His promise is, that when we seek Him, and seek Him very genuinely? He shall be found to us.

    God bless you all!

      Thank you for comment Esther!

That was beautifully said and I agree with you entirely!!

You are that God NEVER gives up on us, when he starts his work in us — he won’t stop until it is FINISHED.

in fact — we can find this in the scriptures!

(Philippians 1:6) “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”

      Amen sister! God bless you

I love Mali’s new one. This is the best praise album of 2014! It sings to so many. I especially love how he sings praise to God in the highest using His Hebrew name Yod-Hei-Vav-Hei (YVHV) which most shorten and simply say YAH on Beautiful. He could not do this using the name Jesus, but we are Christian so we understand that Jesus is God through Trinity or Godhead doctrine right?

    • dlundy1

      Hey Monique!

      Thanks for your comment.

Yes I am pretty sure that any Christian would understand that God “The Father”, God “The Son”, and God “The Holy Spirit” are one.

But the purpose of the article was not to imply that Mali no longer talks about God in his songs — he does.

But instead the purpose of this article is to point out that Mali’s music is no longer Christ-centered. Instead he only includes religious terms and references every now-and-then.

This is a drastic change from the OLD Mali who mentioned God and exalted his name in every song.

Now if we examine Mali’s older Music we see that he always glorifies God — But if we look at his newer music we see that he lightly MENTIONS God occasionally.

Would you say that he is getting CLOSER to God or further away from him? (judging solely by his music)

I heard Mali Music perform recently at the Cincinnati Music Festival and hoped that I would hear at least one of his songs from his 1st two albums. But sadly I did not. I think I was in denial about his decision to go secular. His previous albums were, I believe, truly anointed and helped me through some tough times. The other artists were fine but Mali’s the reason I made the decision to go!
He did wear a ‘Jesus’ cap at least (lol). But in all seriousness, although Jesus Christ defeated the enemy at Calvary, many people of God (including myself) don’t wear our armor (Ephesians 6:10-18) as we should to fight him effectively. The word of God warns us in 1 Peter 5:8 that we have to be on the lookout for the enemy and shut him down whenever & wherever he presents himself. He’s slick and if we ever need to be reminded of that just remember Adam & Eve. But I agree with the
sister’s post that it’s not too late for Mali. We all make mistakes & God is merciful (thank God!) but I hope that the emptiness that his new music reflects will be the driving force to compel him back to his first love – which is to give God the praise & glory.

Now that was beautiful said. It saddens me to see people not understanding what exactly is going on. It is time to realize who you are and who they are..The Most High is using his tool to wake his people. His awakening is something that some people aren’t quite ready to understand. Soon our people will realize and wake from this darkness that we’ve been in for 400 years. One day it will happen. God Bless you all. Shalom.
