6 reasons why “Mary & Vertasha” story is likely a HOAX

Deon
September 15, 2014

mary-and-vertasha-carterIf you have been on Instagram or any other social-media site lately you may have heard about Mary and Vertasha.

The mother and daughter allegedly decided to reveal to the world their Lesbian relationship with one another.

According to sources…

“Vertasha and I knew we were attracted to each other when she was sixteen,” Mary Carter said.

“But we decided to wait to have sex until she was eighteen, legally of age. We are now going public with our relationship to help others who might be in gay mother/daughter relationship feel confident and okay about coming out. We want the world to know we love each other as mother and daughter and romantically.”

Now if you are anything like me, you were probably disgusted at the thought of something like this. How could a mother be physically attracted to the fruit of her own womb?

Even if we put all religious convictions aside for a moment, does not even nature tell us that this is extremely wrong?

But as I sat and thought about it, something just didn’t seem right.

The story was so unbelievable that I simply could not believe it without conducting further research.

It was this research that lead me to the 6 reasons why this story is more than likely a Hoax created by some “star-crazed” tabloid looking to manufacture the next viral story.

Reason #1: No News Coverage

B-02-250 by 350The first thing I noticed while conducting my research was the fact that there was essentially NO news coverage of this mind-boggling event.

Nothing from CNN, FOX, MSNBC, NY-TIMES
— heck I would have even accepted an article from ABC.

… no credible sources.

What I DID find however was a Twitter-Page for Mary & her daughter Vatasha.
It was the discovery of this twitter page that lead me to Reason #2.

mary-vertasha-lesbian-news-search

Reason #2: Mary & Vertasha just joined Twitter 17 hours ago?

When I stumbled across the Twitter account @VertashaAndMary I immediately tried to identify the age of the twitter account.

If the twitter account had been up and running several years (or even 6 months) before the story broke — maybe it had some credibility.

NOTE: Before the new Twitter update in 2014 — there was no way to identify how old a Twitter account is just by looking at it. Instead If we wanted to identify its age we had to scroll through all of a users tweets and find the very first one.

As you can imagine this was time consuming (not to mention annoying),
fortunately several tools sprang up that would do this for us such as TwBirthday or WhenDidYouJoinTwitter.

deon-lundy-twitterFortunately Twitter finally “Wised-Up” and started showing it on the User’s actual twitter-page.

(The image shows a screen-shot of my Twitter account along with its age.)

So as I began searching the on the twitter-page @VertashaAndMary l noticed something strange about it

— the Age had been Hidden.

Hmm… now why would someone want to do that?

Popular Post: NFL player Forced to Hide ‘Know Jesus Know Peace’ tee-shirt

So long story short, I had to do things the ‘old-fashioned’ way by scrolling though all the tweets in order to find the very first one.

Luckily there was only roughly 200 tweets on the twitter account,
if they had nearly as many tweets as I do (105k+) — that could have taken a long time!

How old is the @VertashaAndMary Twitter account?

It would appear that the twitter account is less than 24 hours old.
(today is 9/15/14 at 1:00pm)

mary-and-vertasha-lesbians-twitter-account

Reason #3: It sprang up over-night

The third reason why this story is a Hoax is simply for the fact that it virtually sprang up over night. Not only has there NOT been a mainstream-media coverage on the story but there isn’t even so much as a reputable article about it.

Reason #4: No Facebook Account

The fourth reason why this story is a Hoax because neither Mary nor Vertasha have Facebook accounts. ( I know it sounds crazy but hear me out )

FACT: According to the Pew Research Center, almost 75% of all Internet Users are on Facebook.

Therefore there is a 75% chance that both Mary and Vertasha both have Facebook Accounts.

Guess what — they don’t.

When I performed a search for both names, Facebook essentially came up with nothing.

Reason #5: Google doesn’t know them

Now because we all have been on Facebook at one point or another
— we know that it is almost impossible to avoid friends and family snapping quick (and sometimes embarrassing) pictures of us and posting them on the web.

Therefore after I realized that they were not on Facebook,
I conducted a quick (yet thorough) Google search for their names to see if I can find any pictures of them  — maybe at the beach, a restaurant, a bar — just SOMEWHERE.

What Did I find? The same image — re-posted all over the place.

mary-and-vertasha-picsReason #6: Who Started the Rumor?

Ok  this last reason is not really a reason — but I wanted to include it anyway.

By this point in my research I had pretty much came to the conclusion that this is definitely a HOAX, but now I wanted to know who started the hoax (I’m a curious guy.)

So I began to search the web and I instruct Google to show me the earliest occurrence of the “Mary and Vertasha” search Query.

When Google returned its results I found that the oldest occurrence of the Hoax came from the website Stupidd.com on September 8, 2014 at 7:30pm.

This website is notorious for fabricating false stories with the hopes of getting Internet Users excited enough to make the rumor go Viral.

Therefore I would say that there is a 95% chance that it was this website that created the Hoax and then created a counterfeit twitter-account to support it.

BOOM — And that is how you debunk a story ladies and gentlemen! 🙂

I do hope you are right but there is a phone number and address in Jonesboro GA for http://www.whitepages.com/name/Vertasha-Carter/Jonesboro-GA/9rwg36q

    • dlundy1

Thanks for your comment Trenna, you can find names for just about ANYONE somewhere.

I don’t doubt that there is a person named Vertasha Carter in the world — there probably is but that doesn’t mean that it is the same person.

There is probably someone named “Willie Joe-Joe Lewis” although I just made that name up lol

    • Selina

Ofcourse there is, just like there are 10 million john stewards..your point?

Trenna, this Vertasha Carter you found is called Geronda Vetasha Carter, and she is 43 years old, and a very respected Judge from Jonesboro, GA , she gradueted in 93 and you can find her on internet. The Vertasha Carter from the hoax is the daughter, so, it would be impossible for her to be 43 y.o. The mother from that story is called MaryCarter.

What led me to thinking this story was false was the fact that they relied so heavily on the sex part??!! Most people coming out in many ways just focus at least on the fact that there in a relationship first. Anything sexual is left up to either imagination or at least not mentioned. It would seem credible if there was more history on the family as a whole and their reasons as to why they both felt the need to be in a relationship. They sort of hopped into telling the world what they were doing sexually far too quickly….that made it even more disgusting….

    • dlundy1

      hey Shan!

Yes that made me very suspicious too. It seemed like someone was trying too hard to make the story unbelievable.

Unfortunately, they did too good a JOB lol

  • Christina G

I am hoping you are right my friend. This is so shameful for them to rope in the LGBT community. This is straight up incest and has nothing to do with being gay!

    • Brandon Buskard

They are both wrong. Being gay and incest.

      • Florida Squeezed

Incest is usually the product of some kind of physical or emotional abuse. Most gay people are consenting adults in a mutually reciprocal relationship. You might think that it’s all the same if your only basis is religion, but that’s your own blindness getting the better of you.

        • forthelove

if this was real, the two women are also consensual

    • Howel baily

Sorry to contradict you Christinia, but the same basis the LGBT community uses to justify their lifestyle, an Incestuous couple can do the same: (i.e. It’s in the animal kingdom, a loving relationship is not just for bearing children, we are grown consenting adults, it’s our business, the bible is not fact)

      • Natkip

Yo you simply cannot equate the adult, consensual loving relationship of an LGBT couple and an incestual couple. One harms no one, it is merely between the two people involved. Incest however can be manipulative, abusive or even pedophilic. Assuming this story is true, who is to say the mother was not attracted to her daughter from when she was a child or an infant and manipulated her mentally into being the same? After all, unless you never grew up together (as is the case with siblings often ending up together because they never knew they were related), the Westermarck effect takes place which negates sexual attraction between family members, which is why you don’t find your parent/brother/sister attractive. This would be wrong. The mother/daughter being gay is harmless, but why are they attracted to each other? In a healthy family that shouldn’t happen. There would either be some shady behaviour from the mum’s side or the mother was extremely absent from the child’s life so she never developed a familial connection with her.

        • forthelove

a incest couple is consensual as well though

          • Natkip

Sometimes, but if they are family that grew up together (as in, not siblings/parents that had never met each other before then), then it’s very likely that there was some manipulation from an early age to accept and encourage the incest. It doesn’t have to be forceful or violent. It can be encouraging certain behaviours in the child, asking the child to do certain things to the parent, or even just educating them wrongly about the way relationships (and consent) works.

          • forthelove

but what if there is no manipulation? and by the way these are two adults as well. there are no children in this situation.

          • Natkip

Then you missed my initial reply that they are adults *now*, but you don’t know if there was coercive behaviour when the child was underage. Which is why I said, in a typical family dynamic there is no sexual attraction because it is negated. If it is atypical, then the members have not lived together long enough to cancel out the attraction or the adult/older person has expressed or taught coercive beliefs onto the child so that they consider it normal to be attracted to your own parent/sibling.

          • forthelove

if there was no coercive behavior when someone is underage, then what’s your beef? not always the case. some are between two adult siblings, cousins, and etc, not just parent and child. they are two adults. if no abuse was in play, then the are free to do whatever right? that if both consensual.

    • forthelove

      both are wrong

  • Great Porn plot though IJS. It baffled me much too as I immediately researched their names I sstumbled here. Y’all are great observers… Gtfoh… next they’ll have a “leaked” home sex tape to be sold/purchased or produced by a predominant adult film company after their hoax is exposed… CRAZINESS!!!

This story had “sensationalist hoax” written all over it. It’s even spread over here in the uk and I happened to stumble upon it through a couple of shared statuses. This world is effed up but thank God we’re not there yet and we’ll hopefully never get to that level of perversion.

    • dlundy1

Yes it really did “Stink” of Hoax lol

But yes although we lived in a very weird world — I simply couldn’t believe that this world has gotten THAT bad

      • Florida Squeezed

Just a little side note about “the world getting that bad”… It has been “that bad” since the dawn of time… There have been incestuous relationships all over the globe, all throughout time… In fact, even the Bible alludes to it. Some incestuous families in America even consider themselves “Christian”, believe it or not… Even if this hoax story were true, it wouldn’t change the fact that most gay people are not like that, just like most straight people are not.

        • dlundy1

Although I am aware that incestuous relationships have been going on since the dawn of human civilization

          — when I said “That Bad” I was referencing the incestuous relationship being “Publicized” as something to be proud of.

Although there may have been a few exceptions throughout history (as always), I would say that the vast majority knew that It would not be accepted mainstream, therefore incestuous relationships often remained underground.

Amazing the garbage that some people will believe just because it’s on the internet somewhere. Clearly this is nothing more than a feeble hoax. If all of the reasons that mentioned here aren’t enough to convince everybody of that how about this…

No. 7 – The complete absence of criminal charges being laid against one or both of them, which would have immediately been headline news worldwide. There is no state in the USA where consent is a defense to an incest charge. Incest is governed by state, not federal law. There is no state that exempts “consenting adults” from being charged either. The fact that Vertasha is supposedly 18 years of age and no longer a minor makes absolutely no difference in terms of existing incest laws. Given the controversial nature of the “revelation”, don’t you think that State Attorneys from coast to coast would be trying to find out who these two are and charge them? Of course they would, if for no other reason than to boost their own political image. If this were anything at all other than an unfounded and false rumor you can bet your bottom dollar that somebody would already be in jail.

No. 8 – The photo that has been used as that of the supposed Mary and Vertasha mother/daughter team appeared first on a Canadian blog back in back in April 2012 and has been flipped for the hoax posting. Evidently the two are not even Americans in the first place.

    http://www.thinkinaboutbeauty.blogspot.com.br/2012/04/mothers-day-2012.html

Really, the entire tone of the tweets seem to be solely geared to inflaming the readers, generating prejudice and hatred against the GLBT community, women and blacks. Which is seems to have done quite well. Clearly the one tweet that “If Vertasha and I were a white mother-daughter same sex couple it would be encouraged. Once again, white privilege.” clearly is playing the race card. It is completely untrue, since anyone, black, white, pink or blue would be charged, race has nothing to do with it at all. Neither does sexual orientation, it is purely a matter of law. If this were not a mother and daughter nobody would even think twice about this insane rumor. What enrages people is not a same-sex relationship, not even the difference in age since both are adults. What enrages people is the fact that incest, at any age, surpasses all taboos in almost every society around the globe.

      Great Finds William!
I may have to update the blog to include a few of your points!

But regarding the Picture, I searched the web High and low for a similar image but nothing came up.

The photo real its belongs to a real mother and daughter taken in 2012 this story was promoted hate and it did so many idiots out there believed it http://www.snopes.com/info/news/vertasha.asp

  • BreezeJC

Haha, as soon as someone posted the link to the original photo I found this hoax blog but sorry
#1) The writer is a effing idiot, Twitter posts the “joined” date of an account since hm, I made a twitter in 2010, the feautre has been there BEFORE 2010, its not new, what the fuck.
#2) The other fucked up part about it is that there’s a Black lesbian incest couple out there somewhur in ‘merica, and they just felt like conjuring up a controversy anonymously, since incest is, ya know, a “white thing”.

    • dlundy1

      Regarding #1:
here is a screenshot of the old twitter > http://tinyurl.com/mjolqmk <

If you examine it, you will see that there is no date of creation
      — therefore your first statement is FALSE.

      Regarding #2:
… I’m sorry, but that makes no sense.

      • BreezeJC

Yes, that’s OLD Twitter. But the Vertasha profile is BRAND NEW. Why is the OLD twitter even relevant? That’s what I’m saying, just because they hid the date or whatever, still makes you look questionable that it took you aaaallllll that searching for a very simple piece of information. And P.P.S. I had a Blackberry in 2010 with a the official app that displayed my join date, so…neux.

        • dlundy1

The old twitter is Relevant because you claimed that the old twitter also showed the date someone joined — Which is false.

You seem awfully mad that I debunked the “Mary and Vertasha Carter” Hoax,

Let me guess, You were one of the ones who helped start it? lol

Thats too bad — But let this serve as a lesson.

If you open the image that William provided in photoshop, the photographer’s copyright information is there in the metadata. 😉 I have debunked hoaxes using that method before…

Isn’t it ridiculous that someone would even come up with something like this? The world is THAT fame crazed that they’d go to ANY length to become a “star”. People have no guilt or morals anymore. I’m glad I came across your article because when I read that I freaked out. The sad part though is that we all know we have people like Morgan Freeman… a father and daughter..( Yes she’s an adopted daughter but the relationship is just the same..) so this story although loquaciously fabricated has a hint of truth to it. =/ This is indeed happening SOMEWHERE but it’s so assign that it’s just a dark secret.

I smelled a hoax based on the absurd quotes that just happen to hit every “right wing anti-gay” talking point… This is exactly what church leaders want you to think of gay people… That we’re all perverts who are trying to destroy family values… But the fact is, THEY are the ones destroying families by creating perverse LIES and even making up FAKE people who never existed. A google “reverse image search” also shows that this photo is a stock photo… The real women in the picture could sue “Stuppid.com” for using their image this way.

  • Florida Squeezed

This photo of “Mary and Vertasha” (not their real names) was actually taken by a photographer named Rodney S. Braun… He lives in Manitoba, Canada… The anti-gay haters who made up this fake story must have used his photo without permission. He does good work. Here’s his website: http://www.rodneysbraun.com/

Not that I don’t think something like this is probably happening somewhere but I just didn’t believe this story. For me once I saw the source was stuppid.com I just thought it would be stupid the believe it. Also researched it thoroughly and saw nothing to convince me

It might not necessarily be that most people believe it without checking the validity. It could be that most people (like me) don’t care enough, or have more important things to do then invest their time scouring the Internet over a story that affects their life in no way, shape or form. JS

  • wokkawokka

The picture used was stolen from a Blog taken in 2012.
    Completely fabricated story!

Hey Deon, I love the title you value. That is the only one I value as well! God bless you bro!
