Question: Why would a Loving GOD create HELL? | [ Learn Why ]

Deon
September 17, 2014

why-did-god-create-hellWhenever I am sharing my Christian faith with a person, I usually begin the conversation by explaining GOD‘s personality and his characteristics.

So you will usually hear me go quickly go through words such as…

  • Loving
  • Patient
  • Merciful
  • Forgiving
  • Longsuffering
  • Compassionate

But one rebuttal that I often hear from unbelievers while explaining this is…

“Well if God is so loving, How could he create a place like HELL?”

Although some people are sincerely curious, others really don’t care what your answer is — they simply just don’t want to believe in him. Furthermore, you always have one person somewhere nearby who jumps at every opportunity they have to try to make a Christian look dumb.

…Don’t take it personally, that’s just the way this world spins — ya know?

christian-friends-talkingDon’t get me wrong, Although there is indeed an extremely simple answer to this question, every person who claims to be a Christian is not always prepared to answer it.

But as any experienced Christian who has engaged with non-believers will tell you…

Seeing a Christian who can’t answer a critical question is like seeing your aunt bring in her special pie on Thanksgiving — EVERYONE wants a piece of that!

So with an smug look on their face, they usually sit back with a grin because they think they have won-over the crowd. Sadly, there have been many cases where they actually did win the crowd — only because the Christian wasn’t equipped to answer this question.

I was faced with a similar question the other day and I could sense that the person felt that they had really disproved my “God is Loving” theory using the existence of HELL as evidence.

So I politely allowed them to finish making their point, but in my mind I was thinking…

“If you knew how many times I have answered this question,
you would probably be embarrassed that you even asked it.”

The point that the person basically made was this —

If GOD is truly loving, then he would not have created a place like HELL
— therefore the Christian God cannot be real.

HELL: Would God really send Humans there?

hellThe answer to this argument is extremely simple but  I often try to respond in a way that helps them answer their own question — that’s how Jesus did it! (and he’s my role-model)

A good response to…

“Well if God is so loving, How could he create a place like HELL?”

would be…

“Well if Humans are loving, How can we create a place like JAIL?”

The Bible tells us exactly why hell was created in (Matthew 25:41 KJV).

(Matthew 25:41)  Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

Here Jesus clearly told his disciples that GOD did NOT create Hell for humans
— instead it was created for the Satan and his Angels.

Long story short, Satan chose to rebel against God — from there he convince one-third (33%) of the lower-ranking angels to join him in his rebellion.

satan-fall-from-heavenOf course they were unsuccessful and were quickly thrust out of heaven and banished from God’s kingdom.

They now roam the Universe (and the earth) waiting for “The Day of Judgement” where they will be sentenced to HELL (lake of fire) for Eternity

(So you can imagine that they are very angry)
Although this topic can be explained further, for brevity’s sake we only are only lightly touching the topic.

But to continue, From (Matthew 25:41) we can see that HELL is a place that God created for Satan and his angels.

But I am sure that many of you are wondering…

“Well if God created Hell for Satan and his angels,
why are humans being sent there?”

This is a good question that actually has a very simple answer!

Free Will: The Beauty of ‘Choice’

The reason humans will die and be sentenced to hell is because of “Free Will”.

Although GOD did not create HELL as a place for humans he allows us to make our own choice, even if the choice we make will harm us in the end.

Because God loves humanity so much
— he has given us the ability to do whatever we want. Whether Good or Evil.

Although it was GOD that created all things and although he could destroy the entire Universe in a tenth of a second — He has given Humans the power to look him in his face and tell him…

“No.”

Just think about that for a minute —
God created the Sun, the Stars, the Moon, The Earth, and the Universe that contains it all.

Universe-God-bibleFurthermore,
he did so using nothing but is WORD. (Genesis 1:3 KJV)

  • His Strength is immeasurable
  • His Wisdom is unfathomable
  • His Love is unmatched
  • His Mercy is unfailing

Yet despite all of GOD’s power, might, and majesty

He gave humans the right to deny and disobey him, or to love and obey him.

(John 14:15)  “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

… Either way, It is our Choice.

Genesis: In The Beginning

In the beginning — long before the Earth, the Universe, or even Angels existed
— God’s WORD was established. (Psalm 119:89 KJV)

It is by GOD’s word that all things were created, likewise it is by his will that all things continue to exist. (John 1:3 / Colossians 1:16 KJV)

Before God created anything, his WORD had already established that the “Wages” of sin is death. (Romans 6:23 KJV)

Therefore when Satan and his angels chose to rebel against God, they Sinned.

If GOD did not punish sin that would make him a Liar — GOD is not a Liar.

Unlike humans, GOD will always do what he says. (Numbers 23:19 KJV)

Therefore when humans choose to disobey GOD and his WORD, we are essentially following after Satan and his angels — therefore if we follow after them, we must take part in their punishment right along with them.

So to conclude, Humans are in hell Not because GOD doesn’t love them

— But rather, because they don’t love GOD.

I just came across this blog and as a new believer i am usually asked by friends and family that very question. Thanks for this post.God bless you.

      Hey Miche!

Thank you for taking the time to read this blog post! I can completely relate to how you feel, sometimes as a new believer we get hit with questions that we are unable to answer (I know from experience).

But it is important to remember that Just because WE may not know the answer
      — that doesn’t mean that there is none.

We just have to find out what it is through studying the word! 🙂

If you ever face a question that you cannot answer, feel free to come here any time and ask me! 🙂

Hi. My name is.Dorothy. Nice blog, but I am still confused. Not trying to disprove you at all. I am just genuinely curious. I have had the same few questions for years that simply could not be answered. First, to address going to hell, what happens to the people who are born with mental illnesses, or psychopaths, who go out & kill someone. Or maybe they simply never accept Jesus Christ. God created all. Why could he not have created everyone with a fair chance? For instance, someone i loved dearly suffered all her life from deep, deep deppression. She just recently ended her own life. This woman was always uplifting others & never went anywhere w out her bible. She was always teaching others about Jesus. But when she got depressed, she couldnt even move from her bed. If in my tiny human heart i couldnt send her, or anyone else for that matter, to a firery pit of hell for everlasting eternity, how could God who has much greater love & understanding of us. How could i ever be more merciful than God. Lastly, if many of man wrote the bible who’s to know some of them didnt go against God & throw in their own opinons or beliefs into the bible while writing. I am not trying to discredit the bible. These are just the thoughts & questions that have never been answered. I am still figuring out my faith & need these questions answered before going any further. If Ayone Has any helpful guidance, please help. Thank you & have a beautiful day!

This article is light & funny. It’s not downplaying any more serious problems going on in the world. It’s just for fun. & has no relation to those topics some of you are bringing up. Wrong article boo. If you’ re going to get mad about women complaining, get over it. Thats what we do.

    Wow.

  • Dorothy Peyton

Hi, my name is Dorothy. I am 23 yrs old & still figuring out my faith. I have a few questions that have never been fully answered. I was hoping you could help me. To address hell, Ive always wondered, what happens to the people born with mental diseases such as, bipolar or just complete psychopaths. Say they commit unforgivable sins before God all due to their condition. Are they sent to hell? God has created all. So why did he not create everyone with an equal & fair chance to succeed? Every answer I’ve gotten has been” its due to sin.”but why does an innocent person have to suffer because of this. If God can intervene why does he not? This is not free will. Someone I loved dearly suffered from a deep, deep depression all her life. Although, she was the kindest, most gentle soul I knew. She loved God & spoke of him often. She never judged, instead, uplifted anyone she met. Just recently depression got the best of her, and she took her own life. She spent her whole life worshipping the Lord. But because she made an impulsive mistake, the Bible teaches us that she goes to a fiery pit of hell for rest of eternity. The bible also teaches us that God’s love & mercy is indescribable compared to ours. What confuses me, is that in my tiny human heart, I could never send her, or anyone else for that matter, to a torturous place for eternity. God’s love & mercy is far greater than mine, so how could he be so cruel? Certain teachings of the Bible, my heart just cannot agree with, which is why Im still on my journey of faith. Lastly, man, with the inspiration from God, wrote the Bible. Of the many men who participated in the creation of the Bible, who’s to say one, or a few, of them didn’t get their own beliefs mixed up with the Word of God? Not to discredit the Bible at all. I am genuinely curious. Please don’t take offense to anything I have said. I am just trying to find my way. Any helpful guidance is welcomed. Thank you!!!

      Hey Dorothy!

Thanks for your comment, I would love to answer that!

But first I would like to apologize for taking so long to get back to you — I usually check for new comments daily but was extremely distracted this weekend.

Secondly, I would like to let you know for future reference that because you are posting as a “Guest” — all of your comments must first be “Approved” by an admin.

This may take up to 24hours (in this case a little longer) But when you post as a guest, you don’t have to try to re-post it over and over again because it will not be visible until it has been approved.

Instead If you would like for your comments to appear IMMEDIATELY, you should consider creating a free disqus account!

      But to answer your question,

The Bible tells us that GOD is a JUST God. He will not punish a person for sin if they don’t KNOW that what they are doing is sin.

For Example, a mentally-challenged person who is not mentally “Fit” enough to comprehend his actions is not Under “The Law” of God simply because they cannot comprehend the law. Therefore GOD will not judge them BY the law.

(Romans 2:12) “For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;”

But for all those who are mentally fit enough to KNOW the law yet choose not to OBEY the law will be judged by the law.

Now with that being said, we must be very careful that we don’t confuse a “sickness” with demonic influence. Many times, Demons can attack a person’s mind to make them think they are crazy, yet doctors don’t know how to address the demonic influence so instead they come up with medical terms such as “Bi-polar” or “Multiple Person disorder” or something similar.

These are not “sicknesses” but instead are Demonic influences. But a Demon or sickness cannot make a person blaspheme GOD, neither can they do it by accident — It must be a conscious and FAIR decision on their part.

Pertaining to your friend whom you loved dearly:

Although it has become common doctrine for Christians to say that anyone who commits suicide (murder) is going to hell — following that same logic, we must say that anyone who has murdered, lied, cheated, stolen, fornicated, or hated is going to hell as well.

Sadly, 100% of Christians fall up under these categories.

We are not saved by our LACK of Sin — we are saved by our FAITH in Christ. Whether a person is saved or not depends on their relationship with Jesus Christ. Furthermore, it is only for GOD to judge.

If you never remember anything about GOD, remember that his judgement is Just and Righteous.

Even if God chose to allow ME to die and lift up my eyes in HELL — he would be 100% Justified.

but NO Christian can honestly say whether she went to heaven or not because only GOD can judge righteously.

yes she did SIN, by taking her own life — if she trusted in JESUS as her lord and savior, then only HE can judge her.

(1 Corinthians 4:4) “For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.”

(1 Corinthians 4:5) “Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.”

But as for Christians, It is not our place to decide who goes to heaven or who goes to hell — simply because if GOD gave each of us RAW JUSTICE, we ALL would be in hell.

(Psalms 130:3) If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

(Psalms 130:4) But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.

Therefore let us commend ALL judgment into the hands of the one who will judge all things in Righteousness.

pertaining to your comment on GOD’s love…

Understand this, GOD will not FORCE us (humans) to do anything because he LOVES us and gave us the ability to make our own choices.

Because of Adam & Eve — HUMANITY is sick with a disease called “Sin”. This disease is deadlier than any other sickness known to mankind. Everyone on the planet is DYING from it.

But GOD loves us so much that he sent us an ANTIDOTE, Jesus Christ.

(John 3:16) “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Now, the CURE to our sin is sitting right there in front of us — but only WE can choose to take the medicine.

Now if GOD sits the CURE for sin right in front of us — and we choose not to ACCEPT it — then how can we blame GOD when we die in our sin?

Therefore it is not GOD that sends us to hell, instead — we send OURSELVES.

      Lastly,
Addressing your comment on the Bible’s Inspiration
Before you can truly understand the answer to this question, you must first understand what the bible IS.

The bible is a HISTORIC account, there is virtually very little “Opinion” in it.

But Most of the “Opinions” in it are people (like King David & King Solomon) just telling how great and how loving God is. (I would argue that this is fact)

But because the Bible is mostly telling WHAT happened, there is virtually no ROOM of any other inspiration from an individual.

Furthermore, the Bible contains many-many “Prophecies” that we can see coming to life all around us. If you Google “Bible Prophesies fulfilled” or any similar search query — you will find a SLEW of them!

But to directly answer your question, the Bible is a historic document — therefore there is not much room for the “Opinion” of men.
      Understand?

      • Yanie-believer

I’ve questioned that a lot too but always not being satisfied with the answers I get from people I know it always leave me doubts and I’m really concerned with those people who’s suffering from mental condition so thank you
You really did explained it very well

      • Vijay E

That’s God’s divine plan. He doesn’t need any justification or certifying whether He’s right or wrong. Brother, you think you are up to His level to understand His reasons!!

My dear bro, dlundy1, if X is beating Y and you try to interpret it as X is actually a Samaritan but he’s thrashing Y after he failed to help Y out of his unfathomable love for Y, it’s just the most ridiculous way of understanding the intentions of X !!!

There are many instances of unforgiving, pride, emotionless, vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleansing, misogynistic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, sadomasochistic and malevolent acts of God in the Old Testament. He needn’t state His reasons and you’re not strong enough to either question or understand. That’s what makes Him God!!

    • richmond valmoria

If you know right and wrong and you choose wrong even if there a burden in your life the outcome will in the wrong. what I mean if there something wrong of physical and mental, and you know what is right and wrong there were always a judgement.

It’s great that you are hungry for God’s word. Bible is the best way to be fullfilled, if there’s something you don’t understand in the bible and you want clear explanation, go to http://www.gotquestions.org. I really like this site. They make it so easy to understand any questions you might have regarding the scripture. Bless you.

  • yeahwtf

I stopped at “Well if Humans are loving, How can we
create a place like JAIL?”. Humans aren’t loving. we have proven that. God isn’t loving. It has proven that.

    • Vijay E

Nice point.. In fact, it jeopardizes the greatness of God with that foolish statement.. Bringing God to the level of humans or implicating humans emotions as derived from God!!

    • richmond valmoria

Human is loving I prove it. Human forget love because of sin.

  • Josh

Do we really have free will? It seems that Satan and his demon’s have been given permission to mess with every aspect of our lives. Our thoughts, actions, and desires are constantly being tampered with for the worse. Are humans really in an environment which provides free will?

    • Zach Dyer

And if we don’t have free will. Why are we held accountable for our actions? If the deck is stacked against us. How could God hold us accountable.

    • Jason x

Are you confused to if you had free will to write your comment or not?

      • Jason x

        Must be a hard life

      • Brian

A free will but holds us accountable for our choice then it’s not a free will. How dumb is the writer

  • Yanie-believer

Thank you for that wonderful explanation you helped me clear some doubts I had
I’m glad I saw your blog 🙂 and I hope you continue helping people with your love for God

why does God let Satan and other fallen angels to roam around here and mess with humans why can’t he keep him locked or vanished forever or can he forgive Satan and give him another chance as what he does to humans?? Please answer I’m really curious

    • Zach Dyer

That’s easy. He just wants to test you and make you stronger. Since God didn’t put the answer in his instruction manual. I had to make the answer up so i’m just throwing darts in the dark.

      • walker-stalker

I know that he wants to test us for him to know who’ll he grant the eternal life but my question is why? Why does he need to test us? Why can’t we just live a peaceful life? No satan = no temptations = no heavy sins= happy life

        • Zach Dyer

The most likely possibility is God is not testing us or even aware that we are here assuming there is an all powerful being. But we haven’t found any hard evidence of any supreme being than word of mouth. And it doesn’t appear there is any consistency in the claims. For example just in protestants alone there are thousands of different doctrines meaning different opinions on scripture. So to answer your question we don’t know if God is even real let alone testing us.

          • Cris

There are miraculous healing going on all over the world through prayers. God is healing people everyday. No joke. Thousands of Muslims converting from having visions of Jesus Christ out of nowhere. Look up Dean Braxton’s testimony. This man died for 1 hour and 45 min its amazing. No matter how many different doctrines there are, all Christians agree with one most important thing, that Jesus is the way, truth and the life. No one can get to the Father except through Him. If you want to know anything, just ask GOD.

          • walker-stalker

Dude look around u, the different kinds of animals from huge elephants to microscopic parasites, the enormous landforms, the depth of the sea forms that still has thousands of unknown creatures and the complexity of human brain. Those are enough to know that there’s a brilliant creator behind all of those. Now, do u wanna know y is he testing us? Well before tht why did he even create us, humans, if everything was already perfect? It’s coz of lucipher the angel on his right hand who had betrayed him and he told God tht no one will ever obey him and so the angelic conflict hqppened and thats y he created us, humans, to prove him wrong

        • richmond valmoria

I think we should have strong connection with God because if not you will perish like the branches of the tree.

          • richmond valmoria

or in other word you should have strong in God, because God is peace, love, happiness etc.

    • Cris

Read Revelation. Satan will be destroyed at the end. We are in the end times. God is being patient and waiting for people to turn to Him. The choice is simple. “Do you want to have everlasting life through Jesus” or face Gods wrath? All of your questions will be answered If you read the bible. But the best thing is to pray for answers. God will answer you. Just ask Him anything you want to know. Talk to Him you have nothing to lose, but everything to gain. Get to know Him, the bible is basically God’s biography. It describes His heart. Once you get to know Him you will start to understand, things are more clear. Just say this to Him ” God, if you are real then I want to know you. Come into my life and help me to understand the truth”.

      • walker-stalker

Thnks for replying but im already beginning to understand it since i study in a christian school and reading bible is one of our activities here

    • deon_L

Hello Walker, I am so sorry that I am just now seeing your response, I wrote this post a very long time ago however I actually wrote a blog post that answers your question. The Answer pertains to Humans and Free Will Read Here >http://www.deonvsearth.com/does-god-give-mankind-free-will-gods-divine-sovereignty-free-will-explained/<

However as a brief response, think about this:

When God created the first Humans (Adam and Eve), he only gave them ONE command, not to eat from the tree.

But think about it, Why would God place a Tree in the Garden in the first place if he didn't want them to eat from it? The answer is because the tree represented free will.

Had the tree not been in the garden, then it would have been impossible for a Human to disobey GOD (even if they wanted to). However God is big on giving us Freedom, we know this because if he wanted to – he could have created us in such a way that it were impossible for ANY creature to disobey (including Satan and his angels).

Yet because God is so loving, He gave both Angels and Humans the right to disobey if we so choose. So why does Satan still roam free? Because it is not yet his time to be bound. Instead God wants to save as many people as he can before time runs out – Because when Satan's eternal damnation comes, then all humans who follow him will also be caught in God's crosshairs.

I hope this answers your question, be sure to read the above mentioned post and follow us on Facebook for faster responses to your questions! http://www.facebook.com/deonvsearth

    • steve

adam and eve handed over authority over earth.. which had been handed to them by God when they chose to sin against God..that gave satan the legal authority to roam over earth.. and Jesus came to give back that authority to whoever believes in him and submits to his lordship

  • Kirsten Maddison

A loving God will choose an alternate place to go to avoid one’s family members.

  • Screwu

Then why did god create flu virus, tuberculosis bacteria, cancer, imbeciles etc? Because he is a true sadistic psychopath

    • Zach Dyer

God didn’t create those things they magically appeared when Adam ate some fruit of the knowledge of good and evil even though it was required to follow the one rule that was given.

It is by GOD’s word that all things were created, likewise it is by his will that all things continue to exist. (John 1:3 / Colossians 1:16 KJV)

If God is really forgiving, why did he not forgive the first sin. then we could all still be in paradise

It’s an absurd I couldn’t send my own son or daughter to an eternal lake of fire even if they didn’t love me. It’s the most absurd ever I think everyone deserves a place in heaven.

I think you don’t get what he’s trying to say, he’s not sending us there, he’s already saving us from being dragged there by satan (luci ferre) and his demons. our wrong sides of the free will (and our following to the temptations of the demons) is what is siding with satan.

Deon doesn’t believe in freedom of speech.

the wages of sin should not be death.Death is eternal torture. That’s way to harsh a punishment for sin. It is cruel and unusual punishment which even humans don’t do. Doesn’t a person who knows that something terrible is about to happen and that person has the power to prevent it without injury to himself have a moral obligation to prevent it?

youre comparing humans toward GOD when you say how are loving humans able to create jail but humans are not a friendly species which is proven so i dont get how you believe that or used that “example’

Entertaining write-up. However, there’s a flaw in presuming that Humans are given a sense of “Free-Will” that can be hidden from an All-powerful God…

God Almighty created and designed the future of every living creature even before they are implemented and are born into existence. Because of such power, no amount of “Free-Will” can be hidden away from the knowledge of the Creator and Designer of one’s future.

A God Almighty already knows the actions you will choose, the thoughts you will form, many years even before you are even born. Thus, Human “Free-Will” is not applicable against a God Almighty.

A post bereft of logic, full of faith. Jail is hardly torture in a lake of fire. God tortures people that don’t believe in the stories of ancient middle easterners. If god exists then it must be evil for giving me a brain that doesn’t buy a story and then punishing me for the actions caused by the brain it created. God also shows it’s evilness in reveling in the death of its own son . This is how absurd the story is – god was mad at the creatures it made so it drowned them all.

It appears some Christians are as narcissistic and arrogant as their god. Any one that thinks the god of the bible is all loving etc etc etc hasn’t actually read the bible.
